Social Media

Brand Yourself

Social Media has changed drastically since the internet was first invented. It started with AIM and Myspace, but has now evolved into Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook as the most common. Snapchat has 94% usage rate of US residents aged 18-24 which are the average ages of college students (eMarket). Social Media has become a way to connect with people professionally and personally.

I use social media for personal reason. I did not begin using social media for professional purposes until I began taking introduction to advertising and public relations class. I have all the typical social media accounts; Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. I use Facebook to update the elderly folks with what is happening in my life with pictures as well as cat videos. My Facebook is and always has been appropriate. I use Twitter for a diary, with it being more of a PG-13/R rating. Since I started this class, I began to realize how badly my Twitter account could affect my future job employment. I decided I need to get more social media accounts that are professional based such as; LinkedIn and AboutMe. I have also begun to clean up my twitter account to make it so my online presence score will be higher.

This is a picture of my Brand Myself score. As you can see it is a very poor score and I have been using the last week to go through old tweets to delete posts that could get me a bad score. I have also been posting more positive things and less about political issues. Political issues I post about are hard for me to delete because my political posts are about advocating for equal rights for EVERYONE! Brand Yourself suggests avoiding these types of posts because people do not allows agree with your opinions. I struggle with this as I believe everyone deserves the same opportunities and rights. Facebook is one of a kind social media platform and nothing compares to it. Facebook has been under fire recently for illegal activity and not having any competition. Facebook has expanded from only posts to messaging, marketplace, reviews, video calling and groups. Facebook is the most used social media and will not be going anywhere anytime soon. An app that is more popular overseas is WhatsApp. WhatsApp is a messaging application, but also social media based. Overseas WhatsApp is used to communicate more than regular text messaging, I learned this while I was in Europe. WhatsApp costs money overseas but is free to use in the United States.

I paid the money to be able to see what posts I should delete to make my reputation score higher. I deleted over 100 Twitter posts that had swear words in them from my early high school days. By deleting these posts I had a major increase in my score.

I have been watching what I post within the last year or two, making sure that I do not have inappropriate content. I do realize my score is still low, but it did increase significantly. I am aware that it is low because I post political content. I reblog items that fight for women rights and equality for everyone, when I know this is not reccomended, but I think everyone deserves equality and it needs to be discussed more.

I really learned how much of what you post impacts your life completely. I know who I am but future employers do not. I need to take care of my image to better myself in the future.
